Simon Spillett .....
"Not many places can say they've put on live jazz for five-plus decades these days. The Trumpet in Bilston in the West Midlands can though. Although best known as the one time (well, lots of times actually) watering hole of iconic Seventies band Slade, the pub has a lengthy musical history, especially as a hot spot for jazz. In fact, around about the time Noddy Holder and the boys were getting all glittered up and striding into pop stardom on platform heels, the Trumpet (then known as the Royal Exchange) put on a memorial benefit for the recently departed Tubby Hayes, raising a fair few quid for his family. Not many people know that
On Friday May 16th you can see a living, breathing (just) tenor saxophonist in its unique environs - me. Returning following a gig there last year I'm appearing with pianist Tim Amman and a trio featuring two fine young musicians associated with the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music, who doubtless think I'm some sad old bastard well past his prime. Who knows - they may be right?
Still here? Well, if you're around these parts on May 16th do come and see the ill-fitting suit and the tatty tenor. You can share this post if you like. Thanks."
